Outdoor Lavanderia, Mexico

Oils on canvas panel, alla prima, plein air painting
2014
12 x 16 inches

Just around the corner from where we stayed in San Miguel de Allende is the public outdoor lavanderia just below the stairs leading uphill to the historical El Chorro building. This was my first real plein air painting in more than just watercolors. We were surrounded by dozens of Mexican schoolchildren who watched with interest as our paintings took shape in a short time. About one hour is all you can really work when the sun is moving in real time and casting shadows.

Oils sticks on canvas panel, 12 x 16 inches

While Jan went into the Public Market in San Miguel de Allende, I stayed outside and took lots of photographs of the busy corner opposite and did this one back at home the same afternoon. Too busy to actually paint plein air in that position! Not quite plein air but close.
